Aquaponics vertical farming, Cos Lettuce, Romaine Lettuce Farm

Farming has never been more sustainable

We grow our farm produce using biodynamic and sustainable principles such as wild harvesting and aquaponics.

The benefits of this system are innumerable. Our farming aquaponics ‘footprint’ takes up only 10% of our available farming land space while much of our farm produce is harvested from wild grown trees and herbs.

Wild harvesting and biodynamic farming

The Wildhorse Homestead Difference

Wild harvesting considers the entire ecosystem. There are no chemicals in the wild, it is nature as it should be. Raw ingredients are collected from the areas of our land that has not been farmed. No trees are cut down in our process. Wild-harvested ingredients are natural and often richer in nutrients because they grow in untamed environments. Our trees are harvested carefully according to their natural growing cycles and seasons so you can be sure that your products are sourced from ethical and sustainable sources. This contributes to the preservation of our natural biodiversity and keeps the ecological balance of the land.

Biodynamic farming is inspired by the biodiversity of natural ecosystems and the uniqueness of each landscape. Annual and perennial vegetables, herbs, flowers, berries, fruits, nuts, grains, pasture, forage, native plants, and pollinators all contribute to plant diversity, amplifying the health and resilience of the farm as a whole. Diversity in domestic animals is also beneficial, as each animal species brings a different relationship to the land and unique quality of manure.

At Wildhorse Homestead we use Alpaca’s, Silver Perch, Chickens, and Bees  to support our farming organism. Biodynamic practices are naturally organic and focus on enhancing soil structure and mineral cycles to maximise the growth of healthy plants.  This is done by using biodynamic preparations made from farm sourced materials of fermented manure, minerals and herbs in combination with composting, manuring, crop and pasture rotations, tree planting and livestock integrated into the farming system.

Water and Land Saving

In a vertical aquaponics system, water is pumped from the fish tank to the top of the vertical structures where it trickles down through the plant roots. This  provides them with the necessary nutrients to thrive and filters the water. The filtered water is then returned to the tank. This continuous cycle ensures that plants and fish thrive in a balanced healthy environment. This system uses 90% less water and 90% less land than conventional farming.

Our Organic and Nutritious Produce

Our produce is naturally organic because our plants grow in our aquaponics vertical towers or are wild harvested. Herbicides and pesticides are not used or they would upset the entire eco-system, kill our fish and poison our dam water. We produce are commercially producing Strawberries, Lettuce, Herbs and Lemon Myrtle.

Our Silver Perch are sold only when they have outgrown our systems ability to sustain them in balance with our plants. Silver perch are a a good source of protein, essential amino acids, and unsaturated fatty acids, including omega-3s.

Our Animals

Alpacas are exceptional animals when it comes to environmental sustainability. Unlike goats and sheep, alpacas graze without uprooting plants, which helps maintain pasture health and prevents soil erosion. Our Alpacas provide a fantastic fertilizer and wool.

Our chickens provide us and our dogs farm fresh eggs every day as well as providing fertiliser and eating nearly all of our waste produce. This reintroduces these nutrients back into the ecosystem in a natural way.

Our Maremma’s are our livestock guardian dogs.  They are a working breed that loves looking after the farm animals while our little Cavoodle is the mice hunter of the family.
