Mosquito bush (Plectranthus neochilus) is a highly fragrant perennial bushy sprawling herb with flowers resembling French lavender. This plant is used to repel mosquitos, flies, snakes and other garden pests. Steep the leaves in boiling water to make a fragrant tea similar to mint tea. The oval leaves are rounded and fleshy, and give off a powerful aroma when rubbed or crushed. This strong menthol odor does a good job at repelling mosquitoes.
The Mosquito bush can tolerate wide temperature ranges, dry conditions and almost any soil, but prefers a well-drained sandy loam in full sun or partial shade. Hard prune after flowering. Stems root easily and the plant extends, where it forms a tidy cluster. Often planted in the landscape of difficult areas and is an ideal companion plant for vegetable gardens.
